The Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) has launched Project Swipe IT, which is an industry-wide effort calling on health insurers, vendors and healthcare providers to adopt standardized, machine-readable patient ID cards.
The benefits of standardized patient ID cards are numerous:
- Automate the registration process – A standard ID process will expedite the registration process and reduce time and manpower costs.
- Speed up the admissions process - Once a patient ID is generated, the patient can reuse the card every time he or she visits the hospital. No need to reregister, which can cause errors and duplicate records.
- Be compliant with industry standards – A smoother flow of patient information between healthcare parties.
