The Importance of Barcodes
Those boxes formed from black lines of thick and thin are on nearly every tag and pre-packaged product you can buy off or racks and shelves. You see them everywhere from on the back of food wrappers at your local grocer, to on the tags of clothes from your favorite retail store. What is it? We are talking about Barcodes. Barcode labeling is a system of more than just an odd series of lines with 12 numbers beneath them. Barcode labeling is everywhere because barcodes have a specific and important purpose.
Barcodes are not only for making check-out lines go faster. A barcode—a UPC (Universal Product Code)—reveals information about the product it is printed on. Barcode labeling is imperative for knowing the manufacturer of the item, the item itself and specifications of it, all in one easily accessible place. The numerical digits beneath the barcode stand for this information. The first six numbers beneath the barcode label formulate a code which represents the manufacturer of the product. Those next five digits stand for the item number of the specific product, while the last number is simply a checking digit for verification purposes of the entire UPC.
Automated Card Systems creates UPC barcodes nearly every single day. But UPC’s are not the only type of barcode labeling that Automated Card Systems can make. With different packages available, Automated Car Systems can also generate a variance of other codes, since barcode labeling quickly changes and can be complex in some instances. Two of the other most common barcodes currently used are Code 128 and Code 39 (also known as 3 of 9). Code 128 encodes numbers as well as symbols and text, used by shipping and packaging companies. Code 39 similarly encodes letters and numbers (with a start and stop character marking the beginning and end of the each data), but it is most often used for inventory tracking, post office use and for identifying name badges, et cetera…
No matter what barcode you need, Automated Card Systems has the barcode labeling package that you need!
